History

The first Jamestown Brass Band was formed on March 1903 and lasted until 1913. After that Jamestown had a fife and drum corps, a drum and bugle corps and, since 1993, The Jamestown Community Band (JCB). The JCB was started as a replacement for a tape recorder that sat on the hood of a jeep playing march music for the Memorial Day Parade. As our founder, Joe England,  says, "It's all about the fun."; fun for the band members and for all the incredible fans in the community. Today this concert band performs regularly ten to fifteen times a year; at Jamestown’s Concert on the Green, at opening day for our children’s sports leagues, at the town’s annual talent show, and other, similar occasions. Many members march in the parades on Memorial Day and July 4th. The band also produces two or three of their own concerts. Check out the "Performances" link at the top of the page for upcoming events.

Membership

Membership in the band is open to all. All of the members are volunteers. Their musical skills range from very basic skills to professional musicians. Most are amateur musicians who simply enjoy playing their instruments. New members are always welcomed. There are no auditions for entry into the band or for playing positions. If you are interested in playing with the band, please feel free to come by on rehearsal night. The band has approximately 30 regular players, and a dozen others who participate when time allows. A few are school age. Members come mostly from Newport County, although some come from other communities in Rhode Island. Everyone has occasional commitments elsewhere, but generally members are expected to regularly attend rehearsals and performances, be prompt and courteous and neatly attired. As a concert band we welcome trumpets, cornets, french horns, oboes, bassoons, various clarinet voices, flutes and piccolos, trombones, baritones, euphoniums, tubas, various voices of saxophones, drums and other percussion, bells and bass guitar. If you would like to receive more information about the band or are considering joining the JCB, please send an email to our new-member coordinator Judy Nelson or come and visit with the band on a rehearsal night.

Rehearsals and Performances

The band rehearses most Tuesday nights from 7:00 - 8:30 PM, at the Jamestown Tavern, 138 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown, RI. This is also the location of many of the bands' performances. There is no charge to attend public performances of the band, however tax-deductable donations are always appreciated. Sources of revenue include donations received at performances, contributions from the Town of Jamestown, individuals and businesses and fund-raising initiatives by the members. The band holds one or two private performances each year, such as the annual opening ceremony of the Conanicut Yacht Club, for which a donation is received. Expenses for the band include the stipend for the director, sheet music, printing, instruments, uniform shirts and a scholarship fund which is awarded to a graduating high school senior who is a member of the band.
